More Writing Rubrics

Because there are a variety of writing tasks, we have developed more writing rubrics to assist you in evaluating and grading written assignments.

Basic Rubric for Written Assignments

This writing rubric is useful for grading essays and other written assignments that have a stated purpose. Ten different criteria are listed on the rubric:

  • 6 criteria to evaluate content and writing effectiveness
  • 3 criteria to evaluate mechanics
  • 1 criteria related to student's responsibility for completing assignments on time with minimal reminders

How To Use This Rubric
Each of the ten criteria offers the student the opportunity to earn up to ten points. If they acheive ten points on all ten criteria, they would earn 100 points - a perfect score. This, of course, is seldom achievable.

On the other hand, if the student completely fails a criteria, he or she earns 6 points. Why 6 points and not 0? Simply stated, six points equals a 60%, which is a failing grade. There are only a few times I give a zero on a criteria. Of course not doing the assignment qualifies for a zero; or submitting three days late gets a zero for that category. There are a few more examples of 0 scores in the discussion below for the Research Paper Grading Scale.

Simply add up all the points and you will have a percentage grade for the student's paper. This rubric works best for assignments with a specific purpose. Below are more writing rubrics for research papers and other assignments.

6 +1 Traits Writing Rubric

Here is a writing rubric you can use to score your student's writing using the 6+1 Traits. The 6 +1 Traits writing assesses each written piece for seven essential qualities of good writing. These seven traits include:

  • Ideas
  • Organization
  • Voice
  • Word choice
  • Sentence fluency
  • Conventions
  • Presentation

Research Paper Evaluation

This homeschool writing rubric is similar to the one above with the following exceptions:

  • It lists ten different criteria for content which will comprise 66.67% of the total grade for the paper.
  • It lists five other criteria for content which comprises 33.33% of the grade.
  • You grade each criteria on a scale of six to ten points without the written description. See the discussion below regarding assigning points.
  • There is room for your written feedback.

How to Assign Points
The use of the basic rubric above will help in understanding how to assign a numeric grade to each criteria. As a whole, I use the following system:
  • 8 Points (C Grade for that criteria) The student showed a minimal (passing) understanding of the criteria and attempt to use it. There is room for improvement.
  • 9 Points (B Grade for that criteria) The paper reflects a solid grasp of that criteria.
  • 10 Points (A Grade for that criteria) You can point to several specific examples of the student excelling for this criteria.
  • 7 Points (D Grade for that criteria) The paper is below the expected level for that criteria.
  • 6 Points (F Grade for that criteria) The student fails to produce acceptable writing or comply with the assignment goals.

As noted above, it seldom is necessary to go below a grade of six for assignments that are turned in. However, if something is completely missing it may earn 0 points. For instance, a poorly put together bibliography of inappropriate resources would earn six points. If there was no bibliography, that would get zero points. Of course, we hope not to see 0's or 6's at all.

The basic rubric above also gives guidelines for the grading of mechanics. Basically, as a general rule of thumb I have used the following scale:
  • 10 points - Less than one error per page. If a student has a six page report, and has five or less spelling errors, that is an A. On a three page report, he or she would need to have two or less errors.
  • 9 points - Between one and two errors per page. For the six page paper, that would be between 6 and 11 errors for the entire report.
  • 8 points - Two or more errors, but less than three errors per page.
  • 7 points - Three or more errors per page, but less than four errors per page.
  • 6 points - Four or more errors per page.
Depending on your students and your expectations, you may wish to modify this requirement.

Important*** I do not recommend down-grading students for not correctly punctuating complex and compound sentences until the last years in high school. We want our students to write with sophisticated sentences and not to stick to the most basic and repetive sentences for fear of not using the comma correctly. I recommend simply showing them the correct punctuation, and working on that skill later. Oh the other hand, if it is a skill you have taught and expect them to know, it would be appropriate to count that in the errors which reduce their grade.

Individualized Research Criteria

It is difficult to develop a rubric to meet the needs of all students, for all writing assignments, for all the years of homeschooling. We would have to develop more writing rubrics every few weeks. However, the basic principles described above can be modified to match the needs of your students.

You can choose either the ten criteria or fifteen criteria rubric and individualize it to meet your needs. With this form, you will be able to develop more writing rubrics as your needs change.
