Here are the objectives for your Nutrition, Health, and Safety unit study.

2. Explain the role of carbohydrates.
3. Compare carbohydrates, proteins, and fat.
4. CDescribe the role of vitamins.
5. Identify major minerals needed in the diet.
6. Compare the benefits of exercise and relaxation.
7. Identify health risks that may be present in the home.
8. Identify three types of fires.
9. Compare the health hazards of smoking. alcohol, and illegal drugs.
10. Discuss the risks of sexual contact outside of a monogamous relationship.
11. Identify strategies that can help individuals avoid abusive relationships.

Science Projects
You will need a minimum of one science project to complete your Nutrition, Health, and Safety unit study. Here are some ideas:
- Read the newspaper of check the internet daily to find articles related to nutrition, health, or safety. Make a lot listing the different articles. Make a pie chart showing which issues get the most publicity.
- Collect and label the leaves of trees or flowers.
Choose on organ system of the human body (such as heart, skin, digestion, etc.) Do an internet search to find out health and safety recommendations related to that system. Make a list of the recommendations. How many of them do yu do? Interview ten other people, and see which are most/least complied with.
- Contact an organization that specializes in a particular safety or health issue, and check their website. Learn what that organization does and evaluate how it has impacted the behavior of individuals or society. For instance, the American Heart Association or the American Trauma Society address specific issues.
MatchCards
The Matchcards are great for teaching and reinforcing the objectives. There is one MatchCard for each of the objectives listed above.
The MatchCards give you:
- A simple diagram of the concept
- Information pieces to place on the student card as a game
- Instructor's card with all the answers, a suggested activity for teaching
- A system for built in review
Every week you will use the corresponding MatchCard to teach the objective. In addition, the students review 5 previously learned MatchCards two or three times per week. This game-like activity is a favorite activity of many students. The Instructor's Guide gives you more ideas on organizing and using the MatchCards.
Unit Study Log
You will complete an Nutrition, Health, and Safety Unit Study Log. It will include your bibliography, description of science projects you do, list of daily readings and activities, and Grading Sheet. The Instructor's Guide gives more information on keeping a Unit Study Log.
