What's So Great About Pizza Fraction Fun

This game has three great qualities.

It really teaches fractions
From the first game that teaches students to add pieces to make a whole, to the seventh game which has students finding factors this game does what it sets out to do: Teach Fractions!

The first games are attractive to young students, who effortlessly learn to recognize simple fractions without realizing they are learning.

It is fun.
Kids want to play one more game of Pizza Fraction Fun. As they play, they learn more advanced concepts. Later they will see those concepts in their math textbook and nod with understanding. After all they did that with the pizza game!

I don't know about your house, but around here pizza is a rather popular food. The only downside: they might ask for pizza for dinner after playing the game.

Let's Sample The Games

Here's a quick tour of the seven different games in Pizza Fraction Fun.

1. Make a whole pizza
Description: Players race each other to be the first to build a whole pizza. They will learn that not all fractions add up to one whole.

2. Recognizing fraction pieces in order to build a whole pizza
Description: Players must build one whole, one ingredient pizza. How? The pizza pieces are face down (can't see the numbers printed on the front of the slices of pizza (1/2, 1/3 etc.)

They spin the spinner. It tells them what fraction they need to get. For instance, 1/4. The player therefore has to identify which slice represents 1/4 of a whole. If they are correct, they add it to the pizza they are building.

3. Recognize which fractions can build one half Description: The first to build three 1/2 pizzas win. However, now the players start to realize you can put 1/4 and 1/8 together to build one half. You can put 1/3 and 1/6 and 1/2 together. But you can't combine 1/3 and 1/4. They are developing a great intrinsic understanding of fractions.

4. Recognizing Equivalent Fractions
Description: Trade pieces of your pizza with the pizza in the middle - but they have to be equivalent. For instance, you can trade two 1/8's for one 1/4.

5. Reducing Fractions
Description: The spinner points to 3/12. Can the player reduce it to 1/4 and take the correct piece. Pizza Fraction Fun is getting into more advanced fraction concepts, and no one is sweating it.

6. Another Equivalency Game
Description: Steal your opponents pizza with the fraction equivalencies you hold in your hand.

7. Finding Factors
Description: The spinner lands on 24. Can the player identify the different factors of 24 (1/12, 1/8, 1/6, 1/4, 1/3, 1/2)
